What Is Brake Fluid?

How do you get a car or object that weighs a thousand pounds and traveling over 75 mph to come to a complete stop? Many people have confidence in this process when they press down on the brake in their car, but brake fluid plays an important role.

Brake fluid is a version of hydraulic fluid that comes in two major types. The Glycol based and silicone-based fluids apply to two different types of braking systems. These systems are an anti-lock braking system (ABS) that uses the Glycol-based, and vehicles without ABS use the silicone-based. These fluids can resist a specific amount of heat while creating the pressure applied to the brake pads. The brake pads then close down on the rotors making the car slow down.

The Glycol-based fluids have up to five classifications made by the Department of Transportation (DOT) to identify which braking system it applies.
